This novel is originally written in Frisian, but also translated into Dutch, Ukrainian and English, which is kind of special for a book that is written in a minority language.The book tells the horrible story of a fisherman who gets taken in captivity by the Germans during the World War II. Despite the fact that the main person answers a lot of questions during the hearings he has to go to, the situation gets worse by day. Rink van der Velde wrote a novel about a simple guy who had to fight the system and the authorities in a time that you knew that you would lose anyway. It is about the sadness of no escape.
Van der Velde is one of the best authors of Friesland. His books are very popular in this unique area and that makes him to one of the most read authors of that Dutch province. In the international press Van der Velde got often compared with great writers, like Ernest Hemmingway.
In the year 2000, Steven de Jong directed a movie based on this novel.
