Two inter-dimensional life forms seek the same dangerous, experimental device, a vortex generator that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of time and space. The Watchers most experienced agent, Gaia Hassani, must once again take human form to locate and destroy the device, by any means necessary, and erase all knowledge of its existence. Her foe, Terra, covets the generator for her own sinister ends, and will stop at nothing to attain it. Her vision for the device is as lethal and final as anything ever encountered by mankind. Gaia quickly discovers Terra is by magnitudes the most powerful and dangerous adversary she has ever encountered. Even the love and assistance of the inventor of the device, Bartholomew Cooksley and Gaia’s unique para-normal abilities, prove wanting against Terra in a deadly battle across time to prevent the end of all life as we know it.

I enjoyed it, more or less. The story had some issues though that kind of stood out for me, such as dramatic tension even though the characters were in different time periods. (Eh, to be fair, I'm not a huge fan of time-travel; and it wasn't trying to be hard sci-fi or anything.) There were some issues with pacing too; I wasn't quite sold on some of the character interactions (a few "Really?" moments). That said, the story was very readable, and those issues are pretty common in genre. The concept was also pretty original and interesting.

Edit: Added back a star in retrospect because well, I was being a bit nit-picking above; at least about the technical pieces. Also realized it was a sophomoric effort; I haven't read their other book.

The Watchers Russell Turney 9780983662242 Books Reviews

That's what I'm talking about. Great scene in the car. Hysterical, I loved it. Plenty of laughs. Hard to put down. Only wish it had been a longer read. Love scenes are a bit mushy for me. Great improvement in writing skills from his first book Tough Justice. Eagerly awaiting the sequel of both books.
Review of The Watchers by Russell Turney

This books starts fast, with an intriguing situation taking place, and as the reader catches on to what's happening, they are lead immediately to yet another mystery. All in the first few pages.

Well done!

Gaia, a Watcher is sent on a mission to earth. Her unprecedented task is to interfere with a human's free will. She is to remove sensitive knowledge from the mind of a university professor, Bart, and destroy his invention. A dangerous device that is `messing' with time.

But there's more for Gaia to deal with.

There's Terra, she's not exactly a Watcher. Hmmm. Terra wants the device for her own use. You can't help but understand Terra's motivation, even if it is a tad drastic, and well, permanent. Let's sum it up that Terra is angry, and then some.

Gaia, not used to a human form, is often overwhelmed by the sensations assaulting her. This is interesting, and at times quite humorous.

The author uses infamous catastrophic events in history craft-fully woven through the plot, hurtling the story forward, catching the characters up in the action, (whether they want to go along or not), thrusting them into one dangerous, exciting, and sometimes beautiful situation after another.

Again, well done!

This story took more than a little thought to pull all these events, actions, and characters, (who are at odds with each other), into a well flowing story line.
Awesome imagination and execution!

Just when you think it's all over and the questions have been answered, the author throws one more enigma into the mix.

Do I sense a sequel?
Note This book does have explicit sexual content.
This book starts off very mysteriously. In the first chapter, the reader has no idea what to think of Gaia; I didn't even know if she was good or evil. But then again, I'm not even sure if she knows at first. This is about a being who is discovering what it's like to be human. She is a watcher, in that she observes the earth and its inhabitants, and she protects people from irregularities in the space-time continuum. Then she's given a very serious and pressing task that requires her to stay in human form longer than ever before, and that is when she starts to really discover herself. She even learns what it's like to love.

This story is so interesting and has so many twists that it's hard to go into detail without revealing too much. I loved how much time travel was in it. One of the places and times that Gaia visits is a significantly mysterious moment in history, and Turney gives a unique explanation for it. He bases all the time travel on fact, and I appreciated that. That time travel element makes this book mainly science fiction, but there's also a little bit of spirituality here (I can't say more on that without giving something away). I really liked the love story as well. Gaia needing someone to love her even though she's so powerful reminds me a little of the movie The Fifth Element (which is one of my favorites). I loved Turney's creativity in creating this story. He gives wonderful descriptions, and I really felt like I knew the characters well. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves sci-fi, but also to anyone who appreciates something a little different. I loved it!
